Teacher-focused interventions typically select targets from a single motivational theory using researcher judgement. We tested whether data-informed target selection could improve student engagement during the transition to secondary school. Using elastic net regression on two-wave data from 1,799 students, we screened 71 teacher behaviours from four theories and identified the six (per subject) that best predicted engagement in physical education (PE) and mathematics.
