There is little doubt that pairing a conditional stimulus with an aversive unconditional stimulus will produce robust changes in behavior caused by later presentations of that conditional stimulus. Recent changes in terminology, however, have obfuscated the psychological processes that might underlie this type of behavioral change. Here, we argue that nomenclature surrounding this type of aversive learning should be standardized to reflect the detailed and historical work that has defined 'fear' as a robust and replicable conditional response following aversive conditioning.
